COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course is designed to provide hand-on training on Base SAS programming, and help students to pass Base SAS programming Certificate exam.  Base SAS is the foundation for efficient programming using SAS language.  The scope of this course ranges from fundamentals of the SAS programming to report writing and data manipulation.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

1.Understand the SAS fundamentals such variable types, naming conventions, etc.

2.Understand SAS programming environments, and difference in various SAS software versions.

3.Set up system options to customerize SAS programming environment.

4.Understand SAS programming process.

5.Detect various SAS programming errors, and make corrections accordingly.

6.Utilize temporary and permanent SAS datasets.

7.Utilize SAS formats, create and apply user-defined formats.

8.Create list and summary reports by using different reporting techniques.

9.Generate tabulation, plots and graphs

  1. Generate reports in different formats by using ODS.
  2. Create SAS datasets from raw data by using different approaches.
  3. Create and efficiently manage variables within Data Step.
  4. Combine SAS datasets through different techniques.
  5. Transform data with SAS functions.
  6. Efficiently utilize Do Loops and Array in Data Step programming.

PREREQUISITES:

  • No previous computer programming training/skills required
  • General typing skills
  • General understanding of the Windows operating system
  • Ability to use a text editor such as Notepad

STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY:

The students are responsible for attending all classes.  Attendance will be taken -- lateness and absences will be reflected in the student’s grade. If you have to miss a class, you must notify the instructor in person or via email the week before the class.

Classroom discussions are encouraged and the students are expected to make meaningful contributions to the discussions. The students are responsible for doing all assignments, including quiz, homework, and projects, and handing them in on time.

Exams must be taken at the given times including mid-term exam and final exam.  No make-up exams will be given. Special handicaps and/or needs can be accommodated, but the instructor must be notified at least one week in advance.

The student must behave in a mature manner at all times – unusual, disturbing or harassing behavior will not be tolerated. Such behavior will lead to ejection from class and possible further actions, including a requested withdrawal from class. Avtech Institute’s school policies must be followed at all times.
